It's like their idol turned their back on them for dat cash. It was really pretty shocking to people in Hong Kong. suddenly started taking money from China and publicly making statements and appearing in videos, saying that China was better than the USA, and that the USA should accept Chinese domination. Then imagine that, I don't know, say Robert Downey Jr.
To sorta wrap your head around what that means, imagine that China and the USA went to war. Dude literally took money from the communist government, and became the face of unification/anti-Hong Kong. Now, you don't have to think that's a bad thing politically, but the way he went about it was pretty shitty. Today, dude is a complete shill for the communist party and sucks the proverbial D of mainland China for $$$. Dude was born and raised in British Hong Kong and made his career in British Hong Kong.
